6 Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; 7 and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; 9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself. 10 So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 The dove came to him toward evening, and behold, in her beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. 12 Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; but she did not return to him again.
Okay, forgive me if this is either ignorant or wrong thinking. You all know that I just speak it as it comes.
It doesn't say here that Noah heard a mighty voice of God saying - send out a dove. It just says, he does it. I mean, it seems like a reasonable thing to do - send out a bird and see if it comes back. Seems as though Noah was using his God-given intellect or reasoning skills to his benefit. I think sometimes I get all wrapped up in whether of not God is leading me to this or that. Don't get me wrong, I think we should be led by God in all things - if He's leading. But, just because I haven't heard his voice about where to eat lunch today, doesn't mean I shouldn't eat lunch today.
I also think it is cool that the dove just went right back to Noah and he put out his hand and took her. Wonder if that "animal whispering" was a gift from God to make possible the accomplishment of his task. God is awfully good at equipping the ones he gives a job to do. Hmmmm, something in that should encourage somebody.
